DENNY, civil parish, that part of Beaulieu within the Forest, a forest walk
A difficult name. Maybe hypothetical Old English 'Dyne-ieg'='slope island' (ie: raised land in marsh), though there is no obvious topographical reason, and the original locus of the place name is not known. If at Denny Lodge, then there is marshland to the east and MATLEY BOG a mile to the north. Or hypothetical 'Dynne-ieg'='Dynne's island'. The man's name 'Dynne' seems to be found without the expected '-s' in 'Dinton' (Buckinhamshire and Wiltshie), but the very fact of duplication invites scepticism.
